A work weekend is when we invite members of our camp community to spend the weekend at camp and help turn our Facility Manager’s “To Do” list, into a “To Done” list.
Show up Friday night and nestle into a cabin with old friends or even maybe some new ones. Hang out, play games, enjoy a campfire and just be here at camp. Saturday morning, get up, have breakfast and be ready to join a team of folks assigned to tasks around camp. We will keep you fed, have more fun Saturday night, then get up and do it again on Sunday morning and get you on the road around noon.
Still have questions? Keep reading for more details or if you are already sold, click here to RSVP by Monday, October 7th so we can start planning for your arrival!
What’s the date?
Friday, October 11th through Sunday, October 13th
Fall colors will abound all around. Come see for yourself! Yeah, we know that rhymed.
Where is it taking place?
North Star Reach – 1200 University Camp Drive, Pinckney, MI 48169
What will we be doing?
Working odd jobs all around camp that we have been wanting to do but never get around to. If this works out well, maybe we’ll all come to your house next weekend to work on your list! Don’t worry, we promise it won’t be all work and no play. We will have lots of fellowship and fun on Friday and Saturday nights.
Did you say we can stay at camp?
Totally! This is like a mash up of a family camp and a workday. We have 12 amazing cabins waiting to be filled. If you have not been here before, our cabins have shared sleeping space with two separate bathrooms. You’ll just need to bring your own bedding and toiletries.
What if I cannot make it the entire time?
That’s way OK. We just need you to let us know your plans so we can plan ourselves. Come Friday night, Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon. Stay through Sunday or head out earlier. This will help us coordinate work teams and make sure we have enough, but don’t waste food!
Speaking of food, what’s on the menu?
We will do our best to accommodate dietary needs (let us know when you RSVP) as we provide buffet style service. Did someone mention no hands spaghetti?
Is this work weekend thing family friendly?
Of course! Bring your whole crew along. We won’t be able to supervise your kids, but you’ll have the option to choose some projects that are age appropriate, or you can just hang out and enjoy some time with your campily. A parent or guardian MUST accompany and supervise participants under the age of 18.
Who can come to a work weekend?
Camp families, volunteers, donors, and anyone you would like to invite or introduce to camp.
Do I need to RSVP?
Yes please, by October 7th. Just click here.
How much does it cost to attend?
Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. We just want to get some work done and gather our camp community together so your service and seeing smiling faces is more than enough.
OK, yeah but will you accept donations?
Well, now that you ask. Sure, but it is not expected. We appreciate the individuals, families and groups that help maintain and improve the grounds and facilities for our campers. Even though we offer Work Weekends at no charge, it does cost approximate $50 per person for a weekend of meals.
We appreciate financial contributions toward covering weekend’s costs. Every donation ensures all available resources go directly towards creating camp opportunities for the children with cancer we serve.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just the stuff you need to sleep, shower and wear. And just like camp, closed toe shoes are preferred. We got the rest. Although we reserve the right to ask if you have any tools or supplies that might be helpful.
Anything we cannot bring?
Just the usual stuff. Camp is a smoke, drug, alcohol and pet free (even though we do love pets) facility.
